How It Works

3D Laser scanning technology works by capturing data in the form of point clouds, which contains millions of 3D coordinates. The scanning equipment uses LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) systems that capture features of objects within the line-of-sight of the scanner. Combining high definition 360 photos with laser scanning offers a dimensionally accurate, ultra-realistic representation of objects and spaces. Point cloud data can be collected by mobile devices like drones and wearable scanners as well as more accurate devices that remain static while the instrument performs the scan. VectorNet employs the best-in-class scanning technologies to fit every client’s need.

What It Looks Like

Utilizing a mobile NavVis VLX scanner, we captured the architectural features of this large historic building.  At VectorNet, we deploy Reality Capture equipment that best applies to the needs of a project.  Our capabilities include merging data from mobile scanners, terrestrial scanners, and drone photogrammetry to provide the highest level of detail.  Combined with hyper-accurate control networks set by survey equipment, like a total station, our 3D laser scanning solutions serve as one source of truth on any AEC project.
